Guide to a secure bike

Bikes have become more expensive and bike thefts have increased in Norway. Luckily there are several steps you can take to reduce the chance of theft and to make recovery easier.

Bike insurance — make sure your bike is insured

As with any valuable, the first priority is to make sure your insurance covers bike theft. Contents or travel insurance usually covers part of the loss, but expensive bikes and e-bikes may warrant extended cover or a dedicated bike policy.

A major benefit of registering your bike in the BikeMember register is that the insurance deductible is often halved — saving you up to NOK 2,000.

How to secure your bike

• Register your bike in the BikeMember register
• Place the Bike-ID sticker visibly on the bike
• Make sure the frame number is correctly registered
• Use an FG-approved bike lock
• Use two locks with different locking mechanisms — at least one FG-approved
• Lock the frame and rear wheel to a fixed bike rack or lamp post
• Lock the front wheel as well
• Store the bike in the garage or basement overnight
• Park in busy, well-lit places
• Take the seat, bike computer or e-bike battery with you

If your bike is stolen: update the status in the register, report to the police, and notify your insurance company.

What is an FG-approved bike lock?

An FG-approved lock is a lock whose components have been carefully tested by qualified specialists and meets the insurance industry's security requirements. A common recommendation is a U-lock combined with a chain lock for the front wheel.
