What to do with a stolen bike

Bike theft has been on the rise in Norway. According to Finans Norge between 10,000 and 15,000 bikes are reported stolen every year — and the actual figure is likely higher.

Here is what to do whether you have had a bike stolen or have found one.

Has your bike been stolen?

If your bike has been stolen there are three things you should do as quickly as possible:

• Report the theft to the police
• Change the status in the bike register
• Notify your insurance company

The first step is to report it to the police, easily done via the online form on the police website. Then change the status of the bike in the register by logging in to My page, opening the bike and setting it to "Stolen".

If someone finds the bike afterwards they can scan the Bike-ID sticker or look up the frame number and send you their location. If the bike is handed in to the police, they have access to our systems.

Either way, report the theft to your insurance company, whether you have bike or contents insurance.

Have you found a stolen bike?

If you find a bike in a suspicious location, first check whether it has a Bike-ID sticker. The stickers are hard to remove but not impossible — look for signs that someone has tried to scrape one off.

If the bike has a Bike-ID sticker you can scan it or look up the frame number, then send an anonymous message to the owner, share your contact details, or notify our customer service.
